If you recently started working from home (like me), or you're a seasoned pro, you are probably aware that there are specific challenges that come with the mixture of home and work. One of these challenges is sitting for long periods of time. You aren't moving from the parking lot to your office or walking to the meeting down the hall or going out for lunch. There's a lot more sitting. My current routine is waking up, walking my dog, then sitting at my desk until my dog reminds me to get up and take him out again. I don't have as many excuses to get up from my chair as I did in the office. I'm sitting a lot more now that I work from home (WFH) and I'm not a fan of this new habit.
According to an article on the Mayo Clinic website about my new habit of sitting too much,"any extended sitting- such as at a desk, behind a wheel or in front of a screen- can be harmful.". One of the health concerns regarding prolonged sitting is the affect it has on the cardiovascular system. When sitting, or standing, for long periods of time your circulation slows down. "The longer you are immobile, the greater is your risk of developing a blood clot" the CDC tells us. Blood clots are formed when you are are immobile, such as people who sit or stand for extended periods of time, or a person who is recovering from surgery or an injury. If a blood clot forms it may break loose and travel to your lungs. This condition is called a pulmonary embolism and can be fatal. Poor circulation, due to sitting, can also cause swelling and aching in your feet and legs. When you sit a lot while WFH your calf muscles are not moving. This means your muscles are not properly supporting the action of pumping the blood in your veins from your legs to your heart. This causes you to retain blood and fluid which causes swelling and the heavy, tiredness in your legs that you may have noticed since working from home.
Enter: compression socks. Compression socks or leggings, gently squeeze your legs to motivate blood flow back up your legs. The squeeze is called a pressure gradient and it guides your sedentary, WFH, venous system back towards your heart.
