Walk a mile in my socks - a hair stylist's perspective on compression socks

Many professions require being on your feet ALL DAY; this is especially true for hair stylists. Hair stylists often work long hours standing behind the chair or at the wash station. Standing all day reduces blood flow, and when you stand in one spot, the regular muscle movements that return blood from the feet and legs to the heart, stops. This can cause painful, achy legs and swelling as well as lead to spider and varicose veins. But, we have a solution, compression!

Often, people think compression socks are going to be ugly and uncomfortable. Manufacturers have come a long way in the departments of comfort and especially fashion. Compression garments come in leggings, pantyhose, tights, thigh highs, a variety of knee high styles, wraps and arm sleeves. You don’t need your doctor to prescribe them to you - anyone who sits or stands for long periods of time throughout the day can benefit from wearing compression!

Let's meet Jackie, a beauty salon owner from Annapolis, Maryland who wears compression for her long days spent managing a salon and beautifying clients!

Q: Tell me about yourself.

A: My name is Jackie, I own a beauty salon in Annapolis, Maryland. I work out on a daily basis, and I love to travel and see the world as much as I can

Q: What is a typical day like for you?

A: I work out before work and then I have long 12-hour days, 5 days a week. However, I love my staff and clients so it’s totally worth it!

Q: How much of your day do you spend sitting and standing?

A: 12 hours of standing behind the chair in my salon

Q: Have you worn compression before?

A: Yes, I started wearing them right out of beauty school, but only wore them for a couple of years. I should have never stopped because I started to get spider veins in my 30’s. I started injection treatments which work, but the veins keep coming back. Just in the last two years, I have started wearing compression tights on a regular basis.

Q: How do your legs and feet feel after a typical work day?

A: If I don’t wear the compression hose, I can’t stand on my feet when I get home. My legs hurt and I have to sit and elevate them for a while.

Q: How do your legs feel after wearing compression socks for a day?

A: After a day of wearing my compression hose I can still walk around my house and cook with no pain. NO JOKE!

Q: What type of shoes do you wear for work?

A: Because I stand all day, I wear either Dansko’s or Dr. Scholl’s. However, if I’m not wearing the hose, it doesn’t matter what kind of shoes I have on, my legs will feel very fatigued.

Q: What did you think of the socks overall?

A: Funny you should ask, because when I was trying to decide what kind of compression socks to buy, I just googled “cute compression tights” and your site came right up. I wasn’t mentally prepared to spend so much money at first, so I just bought one pair of tights to test them out. Once I wore them, I went back to your site and bought one for every day of the week, plus I got some compression socks.
