Walk a mile in my socks - a golfers perspective on compression socks

Walking for a round of 18 holes of golf will have you clocking about 6 miles. While this makes for a healthy day of exercise and fresh air, it can also leave your legs and feet tired, achy and swollen. The golf shoes you wear are important to foot support and comfort, what is equally important are the socks you wear.

Compression socks are specially designed to improve blood circulation which energizes your legs and reduces the feelings of fatigue and heaviness. The compression also assists other fluids in circulating to prevent swelling after a long day on the links. When it comes to athletic compression, there is something for everyone; knee high, crew length, low cut and no show socks as well as calf sleeves and running tights.  The benefits of these socks don't end with compression, they have arch support, a padded foot bed to prevent blisters and breathable materials to keep feet cool and dry.

Let's meet Karen, while she frequently wears compression at work during the cold months she had not worn compression socks for her favorite pastime, golf.

Q: What is a typical round of golf like for you?

A: While I ordinarily use a cart when I golf, I recently had the opportunity to walk 18 holes on a nationally known golf course with a lot of up-and-down. I usually wear moisture-wicking socks, not compression socks.

Q: When you do walk the course, how many hours are you on your feet?

A: Usually about 5 hours.

Q: Have you worn compression socks before?

A: Yes, I'm a physician so my job requires me to be on my feet all day. I regularly wear compression socks at work, especially in the cold months.

Q: How did your legs feel after wearing compression socks for a day of golf?

A: Initially I was concerned the socks would be too thick and therefore too hot. In reality they were extremely comfortable. I had no problem with my feet feeling overheated. I feel the compression factor added to the comfort of the sock during that round. It was not a quick round of golf; I was on my feet for 5 hours. But never during that time did I feel like my feet were swollen or overheated. They were extremely comfortable.

Q: What did you think of the socks overall?

A: I feel from a functionality standpoint the socks were excellent. I would recommend them to anyone who walks a golf course. My only suggestion would be that they rose not quite so high, that they had a slightly lower profile. Editors note; our subject requested low cut socks but we also offer CEP No Show Socks 3.0 for those who prefer a low profile sock.

The compression socks Karen wore for her round of golf are the CEP Low Cut Socks 3.0.
